Adoption Details

How does this process work?

***Due to the recent coronavirus outbreak, we have made some changes to our application process until further notice. We will update the details listed on the website once we resume normal application processing.***

Thank you for your interest in adopting through Nickel City Canine Rescue! Below you will find our application. Once received, we will begin processing it as quickly as possible. Our process includes checking your personal and veterinarian references, a virtual home visit, and a meet and greet.

  1. Fill out the online application.

  2. Once received, a volunteer will be assigned to your app. They will first make the reference calls and contact your vet.

  3. If you have current pets or have had any in the past 2 years they MUST to spayed or neutered and up to date on required vaccinations. Required vaccinations include rabies for both dogs and cats and distemper/parvo for dogs. Kennel cough/Bordatella is highly recommended but not required for dogs. If current animals are not vaccinated and spayed/neutered, the application will be denied.

  4. After calls have been completed, the volunteer will contact you to set up a virtual home visit. This will entail either a tour of the home through photos, video, facetime, skype, or other form of video chat. If done with a live video chat, we will require at least 1 photo of the living space be sent to verify the home at the time of the meet and greet.

  5. Once the virtual home visit is completed, you will be able to express interest in dogs and set up meet and greets.

  6. Please note that this is a partial approval, you will not be fully approved until the meet and greet and a volunteer steps foot in your home*. There is no guarantee that you will be fully approved at the time of the meet and greet. The foster may deny if there is any inconsistencies between the virtual home visit and in person visit or any concerns that were not discovered during the online phase. The volunteer may also update the approval with restrictions if needed. If approved during the meet and greet, you will be given an approval card to keep for that adoption or any future adoptions.

  7. Please keep in mind this is a VOLUNTEER doing this in their free time, it may not happen immediately.

**General Disclaimer- Once a dog is posted online it is open to receive multiple applications. We do not limit the number of apps and cannot guarantee the dog will be available by the time your home visit has been completed. If there are already pre-approved adopters interested, their names will be placed on the dog’s list. This is why we highly recommend getting approved ahead of time. If it is a popular dog, it will likely have a list of names before your application can be processed.

Once the approved after the virtual home visit:

  1. Email or Facebook message the rescue stating your name on the app, the dog(s) you are interested in, and best way to contact you.

  2. Your name will be placed on the dogs list. This is a first come first serve basis. We accept up to 5 names on each dogs list. You are NOT guaranteed a meet and greet as there may be people ahead of you on the list!

  3. The dogs foster will reach out to set up a meet and greet if they get to your name. You may not hear from the foster immediately if there are people ahead of you meeting the dog.

  4. If you have a meet and greet and both adopter and foster think it’s the right fit, the adoption may be finalized.

  5. If a dog gets adopted by another adopter ahead of you on the list, the dog will be removed from the website and the available dogs folder on Facebook. We try to send emails to notify adopters, but this is not an automated system and with so many dogs and names this may get missed on occasion. Feel free to message or email for an update. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at

We do our best to respond to each email, inquiry, and application in a timely manner. Please be sure to monitor your email account and your phone to ensure we are able to contact you. Furthermore, please make sure your personal references, your veterinarian, and your landlord (if applicable) are aware that we will be calling to ensure no delays in processing your application. If you are concerned because you haven’t been contacted in a timely manner, please do feel free to follow up with us, check in, & let us that you are still interested!

*Currently we only adopt out within a 1 hour drive from the Buffalo Niagara airport.  We will considered processing applications outside that area if the family has no other dogs in the home and is willing to come to buffalo for the Meet and Greet.  The rescue does not provide transport services to out of town adopters

If you have any questions or have trouble with the application, feel free to contact us at

Foster-to-Adopt Program

This program is a wonderful way to see if a dog is the right fit for you and your family prior to committing to adoption.  The foster-to-adopt program is designed to allow families to select a dog directly from a shelter that is in need of rescue and to foster the dog for a one-week trial basis to ensure the dog is a great match.  To Find out more Click here
